all about eve: a sophisticated kids room
This is where I actually wanted to start - Kids rooms are the most fun to do. I love trying to balance the sophisticated design of the rest of the home with the fun of being a kid and their unique needs. In our apartment, Eve’s room is my favorite - it feels joyful without screaming ‘baby room’.
The room I’ve picked for Eve is my favorite room of the house. It is cozy while still having great light and has a door that opens directly out to the upstairs deck. I’ve imagined summer nights reading bedtime stories outside or an early morning breakfast and playtime out there before it gets too hot. Its such a cool space. Here’s a few shots with the previous owner’s furniture - coincidentally, it was her daughter’s room too…
Eve, Checking out her new room!

I remember first visiting the house and thinking it felt like such a fairy tale cottage and this room really embodies that warmth. I also immediately thought of a sophisticated room designed by Phoebe Nichol and this became my inspiration…

Design by Phoebe Nichol
This room by Phoebe Nichol was similar in structure to Eve’s with the angled ceilings and I loved her approach to it, covering floors and walls in the same lightly saturated paint color. I loved the color and the texture the roman clay finish brought to the space. I took this as a jumping off point and layered in textures, furniture and art that felt appropriate for the setting. I did a quick mockup modernizing it with some art and making it Hamptons appropriate with a touch of rattan and a bleached jute rug:
I continued on selecting furniture, lighting, art and accent pillows…
I started purchasing furniture and it arrived a day after we closed on the house. I took my time swatching paint colors and while I was in the midst of making the final selection, the pipe broke in the pool house and my focus shifted to the new urgent project. Eve’s room would have to wait.
Everything happens for a reason! Thankfully I did not paint the room this perfect shade of pink because shortly after the pipe burst we found out we were pregnant with a baby boy! Time to shift gears…
Though thrilled with the news, I was pretty bummed i’d never see this pink room come to fruition. I looked to pivot and landed on the obvious - blue. I layered this reference image to my mood board…
It evokes a similar warmth with the color enveloping you in the space. I updated the mockup…
Close enough! On to swatching a few dozen blues! More on the blue swatches, final selection and all the details of this room to come!
